So... what's new?
I don’t need to tell you that 2020 has been, well, awful for us all. For me, up until 3 or 4 weeks ago things have been a bit of a blur and I have found it very difficult to see the wood from the trees for most of the year. Constant changes in Govt ‘policy’ have created huge amounts of uncertainty and subsequent postponements / cancellations in the wedding industry, and the latest ‘possibly 6 months’ announcement from Bojo the clown was (in my opinion) hugely reckless and immediately resulted in me losing all business until May of next year (postponements which is good in the long run, but awful for cash flow in the short term). I am obviously not alone in this situation.
So, it’s no wonder that to be honest my mind has been a mess over the last few months. Trying to come to a decision about what to do has been next to impossible as the goal posts keep on moving.
But, something interesting happened a couple of weeks ago… I went for a job interview.
As soon as my early 2021 work was postponed it became clear to me that for the next 7 months or so I will have very little to do and I had to find something to keep me busy. It wasn’t a high level job…simply a warehouse operative role that would have given me something to do whilst providing an income.
I went along to the interview and lasted 5 minutes before I had to make my excuses and leave. Nothing to do with the job… I would happily of done the work without hesitation. But, the simply thought of ‘giving up’ after pouring my heart and soul into my business for the past many years was just something I could not stomach. I left before I lost it.
However, within seconds of leaving the building the cloud of uncertainty left me. If (at this point) I can’t work for anyone else then I have to take things into my own hands and use the 7 months (hopefully not more) productively.
So what does it mean for my business?
Well, for starters I actually now have two!
Over the summer I have spent a lot of time working in our Garden. In addition to carrying out tasks that have been on ‘the list’ for years…such as demolishing the Garden shed I have built two new garden decking areas, built a bar and started making garden furniture and it’s pretty good even if I say so myself. So I am going to start selling my furniture through my new business ‘Ohana Garden Life’ (for those that don’t know, Ohana means ‘Family’ in Hawaiian). I wanted to created a slice of tropical island heaven in my garden and this is the basis for my new venture! More details to follow.
I also have a new blog. Anyone that knows me will be well aware that I have an unhealthy obsession with Las Vegas. So I started writing about it (mainly because we weren’t able to visit this year). The blog has grown and I will shortly be offering both prints and other merchandise for sale…some of which was designed by my super talented niece. Again, more to come soon…
But what about my Photography?
Well, this year I did have a full diary of weddings but I will end up shooting just one. (Alice and Dans last weekend… it was wonderful).
This does mean that next year ‘should’ be busier unless the circus otherwise known as our Govt decide to utterly destroy the economy (not putting anything past them right now).
In the meantime I have made a few additions to my offerings which (with the exception of wedding photography) can be purchased directly via my website, as follows:
eGiftcards, and
I now except Bitcoin!
I will be writing a little more about all of the above in the coming weeks but suffice to say, hopefully all of this will keep me busy (and help pay the bills) until the clown show decide that people can get married in front of more than one man and his dog.
Thank you and take care of one another.
